Story:
In the 17th century, the German Reich was unable to offer its merchant ships protection through organized escorting.
When Hamburg lost a total of 13 merchant ships to pirates in the years 1662-1667 and thus the shipping of the city almost came to a standstill, the citizens decided in 1667 to build two strong warships as „Convoyschiffe“.
It was the Leopoldus Primus and the WAPEN VON HAMBURG.
The WAPEN VON HAMBURG was built at the shipyard at Deichtor in Hamburg by a Dutch shipbuilder.
The woodwork was finished in 1668. Then the guns were installed.
The ship could then be put into service in 1669.
From 1669, the ship served as escort ship for trade trips to Malaga, Cadiz, Lisbon and in the north to Spitsbergen.
In October 1683, on the way to Cadiz, for unknown reasons, a fire broke out in the bow of the ship, spreading rapidly across the ship.
As the crew desperately tried to quench, the fire reached the powder chamber and caused a devastating explosion that destroyed the ship.
