Story:
The Mississippi boat was christened in the name of the famous general Robert Edward Lee.
The „Robt.E.Lee“ became world famous in 1870 by winning the Mississippi race from New Orleans to St. Louis.
She drove the distance over 2’100 km in a new record time of 3 days, 18 hours and 14 minutes and defeated the luxury boat „Natchez“ by 3 hours and 44 minutes.
To increase the steam pressure of the boiler, the captain burned almost all the furniture.
The average speed was 23.3 km / h, of course, upriver. The water for the boilers was taken from the river by a vapor pump (doctor engine) and led into a water tank (mud drum).
This „mud drum“ had to be cleaned at least every 2 hours. The Ø-life of the paddle steamer was at that time about 5 years!
Most ships burned after boiler explosions, in which a total of 4,200 people were killed.
In 1898, the end of the side wheel steamer began on the Mississippi.
They could no longer compete with the railroad.
