Story:
The ship designated by Columbus as Santa Maria belonged to Juan de la Cosa and was leased to Columbus for the discovery project.
At that time the ship was still called „La Gallega“ after the place where it was built.
Christopher Columbus led the ship as captain until it stranded.
Instead of a sea route to „East Asia“ discovered Columbus on his first trip America.
Not the continent, but islands of the Bahamas. On December 25, 1492, the Santa Maria ran on a sandbar in front of Hispaniola ,.
The ship could not be saved.
The wood was used for the construction of the first Spanish settlement on American soil, La Navidad. Quote: „Neither the general literature on shipping, nor the Spanish technical literature provide accurate information on the ships of Columbus.
What we know comes mostly from the logbook of the Genoese navigator.
Therefore, the dimensions are by no means accurate.
The experts are arguing about which ship class the Santa Maria belongs to: a caravel in terms of its bodywork – but the sails are more of a Karacke.
Columbus noted in the logbook entry of December 26, 1492: „.. because the Santa Maria was a very heavy vessel and not suitable for exploration.
